Imagine being caught in a warehouse fire without hope of escape as you don’t know your way around and can’t see because of the flames. The smoke, the heat, the sound. Imagine a big hunk of a guy with all kinds of anti-fire gear and professional fire-fighting equipment appears suddenly through the flames, hands you what you need to make it out alive, and yells at you with all urgency to put it on and follow him.
Imagine thinking the protective gear he’s given you is what you need and not to follow him… so you walk the opposite way and disappear in the smoke!
We cannot grovel in miry clay and rubbish piles and have dominion over them at the same time. We can only dominate the earth from the heavenly places seated in Christ at the King’s table, eating His bread and drinking from Him, clothed in fine linen garments which are: the righteous deeds (i.e. the loving deeds) of the saints.
Somewhere in the heavenly places are angels watching the children of God saying: what on Earth are they doing?! Why do they who have been offered a place at the table of the King of Kings, keep feeding on their own vomit?
Look at the feast set before them! Don’t they see? Can’t they perceive?
And the odor of our sins are as egregious as the foul stench of decaying flesh from a corpse that’s left for days under the sun. He has given His angels charge over us to keep us in all our way, but I wonder how they must cringe sometimes at our ways.
It’s time we see our lack of love (sin) for what it really is: puke, decaying flesh, and miry clay. Jealousy and envy: puke. Manipulating the truth: puke. Taking what’s not really allotted to us: puke. Wanting what others have: puke. Covering up the truth: puke. Partiality: double puke. Preferential treatment: triple puke. Sex outside of marriage: mud hell. Gluttony: decaying flesh. Drunkenness and debauchery: miry clay. Gossip, slander, evil talk, corrupt communication: decaying flesh – death!
Jesus is coming for a bride that is alive and fully clothed in love. Every commandment of God is meant to give you life and can be summarized in this: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and love your neighbor as yourself. We must obey Him if we want to live. It’s time we see righteousness for what it really is: love, joy, peace, purity, light and life – the dignified way of Kings and priests, not a set of religious rules that are meant to make us miserable.
My prayer is that Holy Spirit will help us believe that the grace that empowers us to say no to ungodliness is really available. That we will indeed lay hold of it, say no to everything that hinders love and walk away from situations that are tempting…
because Jesus HAS set us free.
Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. – John 8:34-36
